UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
