Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that winning the World Cup demands contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the game plans and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Skill counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed the national side qualify at the tournament in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel mention valuing the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Jude possesses the edge. You need a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and build a setting where he can use his drive in matches and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 who needs coaching. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss had to consider the player after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this idea about him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
He agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed one star making runs for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he hinted at using the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to develop the understanding with his teammate going. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to score in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
