The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The England national team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the relatively straightforward passage for a tournament staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an England men’s match since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Kickoff and Protest

The championship was launched at an gathering in central London on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the venue by about 50 protesters, who urged Israel’s national side to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Schedule

The first match of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.

Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.

It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help engage a wider spectrum of viewers.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.

Official Statement

“This will be a tournament for the supporters and a showcase of everything we value about the sport – its fervor and ability to unite individuals.”

More than three million admissions, a record for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be made available to fans.
