The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
