For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
