Supply Lines in the Sea: A Review of Food Delivery – An Intense Journey Along Resupply Routes in the China Standoff.

Director Baby Ruth Villarama and her team embark on a diverse assortment of sea craft to document the continuing conflict and its consequences between the Philippines and China over sovereignty of the recently named West Philippine Sea. These waters, considered by nearly everyone apart from China as within the Philippines' maritime territory, has seen escalating incursions by Chinese vessels. Among them are fishing boats, the majority consist of China's coast guard vessels that have reportedly harassed, intentionally hit, and attempted to board Filipino boats amid the ongoing standoff.

Portions of the film are highly charged, but frequently the conflict manifests as a tense game of seaborne intimidation. Personnel on opposing vessels deliver impassioned speeches over short-wave, peppered with legal jargon, creating a form of long-distance negotiation.

The Mission Behind the Title

The film's title highlights the ongoing mission by the Filipino military to transport essentials to isolated garrisons in the West Philippine Sea where troops maintain a presence for long, solitary stretches. These specks of land are often just small accumulations of sand in the shallows, about the size of a sports field, reachable solely via speeding rubber dinghies.

These trips prove evidently terrifying for the cargo of baby goats, which are shipped with preserved supplies and additional provisions. Viewers see the creatures seeking for secure footing as the boats hurtle across the rolling sea.

Voices from the Shoal

The film also follows fishers living around the inhabited Scarborough Shoal, who express concern over dwindling catches due to the persistent presence of Chinese fishing boats in their ancestral fishing areas.

Fascinating Topic, Flawed Presentation

Critically speaking, the documentary suffers a bit from a slightly disjointed narrative approach and a musical score that can feel a bit heavy-handed, overemphasizing the emotional beats. Nevertheless, it stands as a fascinating exploration of a geopolitical issue that gets scant attention beyond Asia.
