Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Leader Steps Down Following Pivot Into Fried Chicken.
A chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have reached pizza saturation while expanding the chain into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its governing body.
Executive Change
Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.
Rennie, who was with the company for over 20 years, had attempted to redirect the UK's biggest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting recently there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the international market.
Board Disagreements
It is understood that there was friction between the CEO and the governance team over his focus and management style, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Product Launch
In the autumn, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the organization – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.
While the firm is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it regards fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Board Comment
The Domino's chair, the company chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to drive further growth and profitability in our primary operations. We are concentrating on finding the right chief executive to oversee the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the food delivery sector had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in half-year profits.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closing of multiple locations a month ago, after the business behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Wellness Initiatives
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards healthier eating, the company has launched reduced-calorie products, such as its thin-crust line of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as vegan and gluten-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a small has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the gambling company William Hill. It is understood that she is not seeking to occupy the CEO position on a full-time basis.
She commented: “We have a several ongoing development and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on carrying out at a rapid rate.”
She said these included further work on the organization's logistics network and product development, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also in need of a full-time CFO until 16 March, when Andrea comes aboard from the drinks company C&C Group. For now, Snow serves as temporary CFO.
