Chicago White Sox Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.
Financial Terms and Added Benefits
The agreement includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for finishing fourth through 10th.
- Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.
The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his approval and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Team Legacy
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami back in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, bolsters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, finishing last in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, eclipsing the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the United States, he hit a equalizing shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
