No less than 64 people were killed in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. More than 80 individuals were detained.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

The informal settlements near the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

Government representatives said a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
